As a student you have the option of complaining about an exam. Before you complain we recommend that you read the information here below.

If you want to make a formal complaint about an exam, you have to make a written complaint stating your reasons for complaining. You must submit your complaint no later than two weeks after you have received your assessment. Your complaint may concern academic or procedural issues, including the examination process itself.

You continue your study programme while your complaint or appeal is being processed. However, you cannot graduate from the study programme as long as your appeal is pending.

Before you complain

  • Read below about the different types of complaints.
  • Talk to a student counsellor. We always recommend that you talk to a student counsellor before sending a formal complaint. A student counsellor can help you clarify whether there are grounds for a complaint.
  • Carefully consider your reasons for complaining. They are an important part of the basis for which a decision is made on.
  • Sleep on it. You have two weeks to submit your complaint, so there is time to think about if and what you want to complain about.

  • Complaints concerning academic issues

If your complaint concerns academic issues and is submitted within the time limit, the head of your study programme will forward your complaint to the examiners.

The examiners will make a statement which will be sent to you. If you wish to comment on the examiners’ statements, you must do so within a week from receiving the statements.

When you have had the possibility to comment, the head of the study programme will reach a decision which will be sent to you.

The decision will lead to one of the following three scenarios:

    • You will be offered a re-assessment of the written assignment by other examiners
    • You will be offered a re-examination with other examiners
    • Your complaint will be rejected.

If you are offered a re-assessment or a re-examination, you must accept the offer within two weeks from receiving the decision.

If you accept the offer, a re-assessment or re-examination will be planned as soon as possible. New examiners will be appointed.

Please note, that both re-assessment and re-examination may result in a lower grade. This grade will then count as your exam result and it is not possible to file a complaint about the grade to the institution or any other administrative authority.

    Appeal

If you do not agree with the content of the decision, you can submit an appeal within two weeks from receiving the decision.

If you appeal the decision, a board of appeal will be set up as soon as possible. The board of appeal will process the case and reach a decision.

The decision will lead to one of the following three scenarios:

    • You will be offered a re-assessment of the written assignment by other examiners
    • You will be offered a re-examination with other examiners
    • Your complaint will be rejected.

The decision issued by the board of appeal is final and cannot be further appealed.

A complaint concerning procedural issues may concern instances where you think that the educational institution has not processed your case according to procedural rules, or if the institution has reached a decision which is in conflict with a ministerial order or the general principles of administrative law.
